Subject: Operation and Engagement Star for Minesweeping Operations,
Pacific from 23 June l945 to closing date to be announced later.
Reference:(a) CominPac Serial 208 of 24 January l946 and Endorsements
Thereto.
Enclosure: (A) Copy of Reference (a) with endorsements.
l. Reference (a) recommends an operation and engagement star
be authorized for vessels of the Mineforse Pacific Fleet for the period
Beginning 23 June l945 and terminating at a date to be later determined.
The basic letter recommends that a star be authorized for personnel of
those vessels or advanced bases which actually engaged in or directly
supported the minesweeping operation.
2. In the second endorsement to reference (a) Commander in
Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, concurs in the basic recommendation in so far as
an award to those units and vessels whose services are in fact hazardous
are concerned and does not concur in the award of and operation and engage-
ment star to base and supporting personnel.
3. After careful consideration of the basic recommendation
and the endorsement thereon by Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet,
the Chief of Naval Operations authorizes an operation and engagement
star for those units and vessels of the Mineforce, Pacific Fleet, who
were engaged in minesweeping operations at any time during the period
beginning 23 June l945 and ending at a date to be later announced. This
operation and engagement star is specifically restricted to those units
and vessels whose services were in fact hazardous, and dates of
participation of individual ships and units are to be restricted to the
periods of actual hazard for specific unit and vessel concerned.
4. The Chief of Naval operation concurs fully in the second
endorsement of the basic correspondence and desires that the policy
therein expressed by closely followed in designating those ships
units eligible for this operation and engagement star.
